How many EV charging stations are there in Pune?
With a view to the future of e-mobility, Pune has embarked on the rapid adoption of electric vehicles. Pune is one of the first cities in India to introduce electric vehicle cells to encourage the usage of electric vehicles in the city. The EV cell is the first electric vehicle governing mechanism in India. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) planned to build 500 charging stations at various points across Pune. These charging stations are expected to be built in the coming years and will charge more and more electric vehicles in the city. Pune RTO data shows that Pune owns 10,417 electric vehicles and bicycles and Pimpri-Chinchwad Twin Cities has 7,139 Electric Vehicles. The city council of Pune has designated gardens, trails, and educational institutions as places for these charging stations. In addition, chargers are used by the Citizens' Cabinet fleet of electric vehicles. PMC will partner with a private company to build these charging centers. The organization assigns these companies a location and then manages the location. The revenues of the facility will be shared between the parties, the private sector is expected to create charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The civic society will be responsible for maintaining the facility and renting the land it uses. PMC has made an offer to install these EV charging stations in the city.
According to the RTO of Pune, the demand for electric vehicles is growing in the city, but the growth rate of electric motorcycles in Pune is faster than that of three-wheelers and four-wheelers. RTO data spans four years and according to that the lack of charging ports is cited as one of the reasons for the poor adoption of EVs in Pune. Last year, a total of 131 electric vehicles were registered between January and September, and 1,952 electric motorcycles were registered in Pune during the same period. The number of registered two-wheeled electric vehicles has been steadily rising over the last four years - 510 in 2018, 844 in 2019 and has doubled to 1,672 in 2020. For electric car registration, it was 21 in 2018, then 29 in 2019, rising to 151 last year, and 131 were recorded last year in September.
A tender has been launched to build 500 electric vehicle charging stations in Pune by PMC
To boost the adoption of electric vehicles, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will soon build 500 EV charging stations and 200 docking stations in Pune. PMC has launched a tender for the same. As part of the E-Bike rating Program, citizens can use e-bikes at the lowest rental prices. PMC also shares in the revenue generated by the companies selected to participate in the project, making Pune the first city in the country to host such a kind of project. As recommended by the Government of Maharashtra, efforts have been made to reduce environmental pollution by increasing the use of green vehicles. As a result, 700 strategic locations including roads, parks, and universities have been selected as charging centers for e-bikes in Pune. There will be one charging point per square kilometer to increase the use of e-bikes by citizens.
