Will there be enough charging stations for electric vehicles in Pune?

After big metropolitan cities like Delhi and Mumbai, Pune has embarked itself as the fifth-largest metropolitan economy and the sixth-largest per capita income. It is an ideal city for economic city planning. The city of Pune is divided into several cities and residential areas to meet the growing demands of EV charging stations across the city due to an increase in the number of electric vehicles in Pune.

To eliminate environmental threats, state governments across the country are working to make transport greener and environment-friendly. Electric cars and bikes make life easier, affordable cost of living, and help to reduce carbon footprints. As a result, electric vehicle charging stations are growing rapidly in the city of Pune. The city plans to create a multifunctional public transport link with well-developed public transport EV charging infrastructure.

Once known as the city of bicycles, the city of Pune is now famous as the city of electric bicycles and electric vehicle charging stations. To boost the adoption of EVs, there are currently 1,500 swapping points in Pune. The Standing Committee of Pune City Corporation has approved the project for the construction of 1000 electric vehicle charging stations in Pune. This initiative will help the government to reduce traffic congestion and environmental problems in Pune.

The Pune Municipal Corporation will install 500 charging stations on highways and major routes at the following cost:

  • Rs 3,800 per month,
  • Rs 1,900 per week,
  • Rs 450 per day, and
  • Rs 100 per hour.

We can calculate that the average cost of using this e-bike will start from a minimum cost of just 90 paise to a maximum cost of Rs 4. The project implementation involves installing one charging station on 500 highways in different parts of Pune city which can charge 10 bikes in one place. Pune Municipal Corporation becomes the first corporation to carry out this project in India by launching a tender for the project. As per the tender, contractors must provide charging stations and self-service stations on their own sites. Moreover, the full safety and responsibility of these vehicles rest with the contractor only.

Setup EV charging station in Pune

As part of the Make in India initiative, the Government of India has withdrawn the approval of a license for public charging stations for electric vehicles. So it is very easy for a person in Pune to start an electric vehicle charging station for public use. The government of India has established rules for a minimum of 3 fast chargers and 2 slow chargers in order to set up any EV charging stations. Access to fast and slow charging is essential and it also increases the cost of electric vehicle charging stations. The cost of establishing a public electric vehicle charging station is approximately more than 1 lakh rupees, including charging equipment, type of chargers, and facilities provided in a station. However, the Ministry of Energy has established guidelines and minimum requirements for the installation of public charging stations. These guidelines and requirements have a significant impact on the cost of installing public charging stations for electric vehicles.
