Why are electric scooters preferable to petrol scooters?
For several years, ecology has been at the heart of the concerns of various sectors, more particularly in the field of automobiles and motorcycling.
This phenomenon has led to the development and improvement of the technical characteristics of electric motors. With an increase in autonomy, faster charging, and lower production costs, two-wheel manufacturers have thus thought of electric scooters. Although they are not yet very well known in India, the latter are very popular in many countries, especially in Asia, because they offer interesting advantages over thermal scooters.
The strengths of the electric scooter
Unlike the thermal scooter which runs on gasoline, the electric scooter works with an electric motor powered by a battery. It has several advantages:
An economical solution
The electric scooter saves you money in the long run since it has very few moving parts, no combustion, and no lubricant. Engine wear is thus limited compared to a combustion engine and therefore does not require regular servicing or maintenance. It also does not need maintenance like the thermal scooter. In addition, the charging cost is lower.
On average, traveling 100 kilometers on an electric scooter will cost you very less in electricity. Knowing that a classic scooter is equivalent to an average consumption of around 3 l/100km, the savings in use are particularly interesting and make it possible to amortize the additional cost observed on purchase.
As a bonus, it is more pleasant to recharge your scooter at home or at the office than having to go to the gas station every week.
A means of transport without exhaust and without CO² emissions
Operating from a battery, the electric scooter uses no drop of fuel, whether oil or gasoline. Driving pleasure is then improved by being able to drive around without giving off odors and smoke.
A silent vehicle
The silent electric scooter. It, therefore, emits no noise pollution wherever you go. You can ride your electric scooter at any time of the day and even at night without the risk of waking up your neighbors.
Aid for the purchase of an electric scooter
In order to support the electric scooter market, the Indian government has set up subsidies for the purchase of electric two-wheelers. This aid can be clubbed with different state subsidies and benefits which also offer more savings on purchasing an e-vehicle of this type.
A still limited choice of electric scooter model
Suzuki, Yamaha, Piaggio, Peugeot, Honda… the traditional brands of the scooter world have very little presence in the electric segment and only offer a very limited range of models at best. Today, it is mainly startups that dominate the electric scooter market.
Find out if the electric scooter that fits your needs
In general, you should assess the economic benefit of buying an electric scooter or another based on three main factors:
- The daily or weekly trip.
- The average cost of the energy to be consumed throughout the planned period of ownership of the electric scooter.
- The budget, or the investment to be made for the electric scooter.
Efficiency: Electric scooters classified in the 50 cc category usually have power between 1 and 4 kilowatts. They have a brushless electric motor often integrated into the rear wheel. This is a good choice if you plan to drive around town most of the time. On the other hand, for extra-urban use, it is necessary to opt for the 125 ccs electric scooter category with sufficient power and torque.
Battery: Almost all new electric scooters feature Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technology. This technology is favored over previous technologies, in particular lead-acid, nickel-cadmium (NiCd), and nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) because it offers greater energy density and makes it possible to reduce the weight and size of the unit battery. It also facilitates recharging and increases the range of the vehicle.
Build Quality: Depending on the desired performance in terms of rigidity and weight, the frame can be made from heavy-duty steel alloys, chromium-molybdenum alloys, aluminum alloys, or composite materials. The welding quality and the build quality of the fork should also be checked properly. Electronic components that are very sensitive to water must be protected by a fully waterproof coating (level IP65).
