Lithium is a non-ferrous metal and is one of the key components in EV batteries,rechargeable batteries that power numerous gadgets like smartphones and laptops, as well as in some non-rechargeable batteries for things like heart pacemakers, toys and clocks.The main elixir that drives electric cars on the streets is none other than Lithium.Lithium is called the new “white gold” because of its market value and its silver color.

India's Mines Ministry announced that 5.9 million tonnes of lithium reserves have been found for the first time in the country in Jammu and Kashmir. This will reduce dependence on imports of lithium, make India self-sufficient and boost EV adoption

"Geological Survey of India for the first time established Lithium inferred resources (G3) of 5.9 million tonnes in the Salal-Haimana area of the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir,"51 mineral blocks including Lithium and Gold were handed over to respective state governments.

Out of these 51 mineral blocks, 5 blocks pertain to gold and other blocks pertain to commodities like potash, molybdenum, base metals etc. spread across 11 states of Jammu and Kashmir (UT), Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana," In 2021 smaller deposits of lithium were found in southern state of Karnataka.

 Chile has the highest lithium reserves in the world at 9.3 million Tonnes, which is followed by Australia at 6.2 million Tonnes, Argentina at 2.7 million Tonnes, China at 2 million Tonnes and finally the US with one million Tonnes.

Vivek Bharadwaj, Ministry of Mines secretary, told Mint newspaper that India had been looking to improve its supply of rare metals needed to boost new technologies and was looking for sources in India and abroad. "re-orienting its exploration measures" to meet this goal.

Experts say that the discovery could aid India's push to increase the number of private electric cars by 30% by 2030.
