This has attracted a number of major EV manufacturers to set up shop in Tamil Nadu, including Renault Nissan which recently announced a ₹5,300 crore investment to manufacture electric vehicles at their Chennai plant.Policy also focuses on establishment of an EV Cell to develop a roadmap for EV adoption and infrastructure development.Subsidy for the first 50 private charging stations set up in Tamil Nadu.

Greater Chennai Corporation is exploring installing charging stations in all 88 public parking lots and 5,000 on-street parking spaces.The Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy 2023 offers subsidies for setting up public and private charging stations, making them more financially viable.The number of charging stations in Chennai is growing rapidly, with both private companies and the government investing in this area. However, there is still a need for more charging stations, especially fast chargers, to meet the growing demand for EVs.

 Two-wheelers are the most popular type of EV in Chennai, with brands like TVS, Ather, and Ola leading the market. There's also a growing selection of electric cars from Tata Motors, Mahindra, and others. Media reports highlight a substantial surge in EV registrations in the state particularly in Chennai.


Skill development : The core of EV success


It is not just an incentive.The government is also working on skill development which is at the core of creating a conducive environment.The objective of this scheme is to identify potential training providers, to impart various skill training based on current industry gaps. As part of this scheme, the government works closely with the industry, to make sure that the syllabus is also tweaked for future demand.Ola Electric has already commenced the construction of the country’s largest gigafactory, by installing the first pillar of its factory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu. The state has an ambition of keeping its competitive edge as the EV capital of India.It is the second most industrialised state in the country, with a relatively high per capita income, indicating how the development of industries has helped in the development of the socio-economic structure in the state.
