Growing popularity of electric vehicles in Telangana’s IT hub Hyderabad
Environment conscious residents of the state are shifting towards green mobility.Thus the number of electric vehicles in the state is on rise. Rapid shift towards EVs more visible in the state's IT hub and capital Hyderabad. As per data provided by the Telangana transport department, as many as 68,872 EVs or battery-operated vehicles were sold in the state between February 2, 2021, to May 31, 2023.
Charging stations play a significant role in the decisions to purchase an electric vehicle by most of the consumers.The Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TSREDCO), a nodal agency for implementing EV infrastructure in the State, has started setting up electric charging stations across the State.So far the state has set up of 425 charging station with private and government charging stations since the launch of Telangana Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Policy 2020-2030.The State government has plans to set up at least 1,000 charging stations in next few months and about 3,000 by 2025.The State government has been providing locations and granting permissions to private vendors who need to create the required infrastructure and manpower for setting up charging stations.As per norms, EV charging stations must be installed every three kilometres in cities and every 25 kms on highways on both sides.
Telangana is a hub for the manufacturing of electric vehicles.
The EV sector in Telangana appears to be gaining popularity as many EV companies are foraying into Telangana.Popular EV companies have signed agreements with the state government to set up their manufacturing units in the state. Telangana’s ‘Electric vehicle and Energy Storage policy’ for creating a friendly environment for EV companies.State government is also providing subsidies under policies.The EV policy was initiated to provide a fillip to the electric vehicle ecosystem in the state.The government is leaving no stone unturned to make Telangana a hub for the manufacturing of electric vehicles.
Government is offering special power tariffs for the sector, tax & registration fee exemption on electric vehicles to a certain extent, discounted interest rates, and encouraging the state transport department to opt for electric buses.
The Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd (TSREDCO) is setting up charging centers and battery stations across the state.
