1. New FICCI report on EVs and EV charging infrastructure.
In its recent report ‘Electric Vehicle Public Charging Infrastructure: 2030 Roadmap’, non-governmental industry body FICCI has talked about the need for investment in public charging infrastructure as EV adoption rises in India. An important paragraph in the report reads: “To keep pace with the growing demand for public charging for EVs and to achieve the mission of over 30% electrification by 2030, India needs a capital expenditure of approximately Rs 16,000 crore.”
The report further mentions that India's transition towards clean energy & sustainability can only be achieved through coordination between policymakers & industry players. FICCI estimates that by 2030, 45-48% of all two-wheelers, 16-20% of all four-wheelers & 30-35% of all buses will be electric. The growth of the EV sector depends on multiple factors of which EV charging infrastructure & cost parity are the most important.
2. Multiple electric cars to debut at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025.
The much-anticipated Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 will feature multiple electric car debuts from Indian & International automakers. The auto expo will be held from 17th to 22nd January, 2025 at Bharat Mandapam (Pragati Maidan) in Delhi.
The main show-stopper at the expo will be Maruti Suzuki’s first electric car, the e Vitara.
Apart from Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai will also debut its Creta EV at the expo. The automaker may showcase the IONIQ 9 electric SUV as well.
VinFast is also expected to unveil its electric cars. Tata Motors, currently India’s top electric car manufacturer, is likely to present two new electric cars at the expo: Harrier EV & Sierra EV.
MG is expected to introduce a performance electric car ‘Cyberster’. The MG Cyberster will be a two-seater electric car which is said to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hr in just 3.2 seconds.
Mahindra is also likely to showcase the electric variant of the XUV700, called the ‘XEV 7e’. Chinese EV manufacturer BYD may introduce the Seagull electric hatchback at the event.
3. Ola Electric announces achievement of a major landmark.
Ola Electric has become the 1st electric vehicle manufacturer in India to achieve retail sales of 4 lakh units in a single calender year. As per the latest Vahan data, the company has sold 4,00,099 units till 15th December, 2024. With more than 4 lakh sales, Ola has achieved a phenomenal 50% year-on-year jump over its 2023 sales.
At present, Ola Electric is the market leader with a 36% share of the electric two-wheeler market, much ahead of TVS with 19% market share, Bajaj Auto with 17% and Ather Energy with 11% market share. Industry experts expect Ola Electric, which recently launched 2 new low cost products, Ola Gig & Ola S1 Z, to have an even stronger 2025.
4. Amazon India achieves EV milestone ahead of schedule.
Amazon India has announced induction of 10,000 EVs in its delivery fleet as part of its decarbonisation efforts. The e-commerce giant has achieved this target a year earlier than it planned. Amazon joined hands with Tata Motors, Mahindra Last Mile Mobility, Ashok Leyland & Altigreen for custom EVs tailored to its logistical needs.
After this, Amazon will focus on testing long-range heavy-duty electric trucks on the Bengaluru-Chennai highway. This project involves industry players like Ashok Leyland, BillionE & Charge Zone, and will assess the potential for electric freight transportation over long distances.
5. Joy e-bike introduces a new electric scooter and an electric auto.
Wardwizard Innovations & Mobility Ltd (owner of the Joy e-bike brand), has introduced a new electric scooter named ‘Nemo’. The Joy Nemo comes with a 2.88 kWh NMC battery which gives a range of 130 km. The top speed is 65 km/hr. Features include smart BMS, digital speedometer, 5-inch display, projector LED headlamp, reverse assist, anti-theft remote lock & vehicle tracking functionality. Bookings for the Nemo are underway. It has been priced at Rs 99,000.
Under its Joy e-rik business vertical, the company launched a passenger electric three-wheeler named ‘V1’. The Joy e-rik V1 comes with a 10.24 kWh battery which gives a range of 140 km. The top speed is 50 km/hr. It has been priced at Rs 3.85 lakh.
