EV Updates - 2023 Auto Expo Part 1

The Auto Expo 2023 is officially underway at the Indian Expo Mart in Greater Noida. It will be a seven day event and the expo has already caught the attention of automobile enthusiasts with some massive launches and some exciting concepts. We will be covering the EV segment here and listing down some of the top electric cars, scooters, motorcycles and more. Let’s start.

1. Maruti Suzuki eVX:

Maruti Suzuki showcased an electric SUV concept called ‘eVX’. It features a 60 kWh battery which provides a claimed range of 550 km. The eVX looks similar to the new Grand Vitara. The car will go on sale in 2025. When launched, it will take on Mahindra XUV400 EV & Tata Nexon EV.

2. BYD Seal:

BYD showcased electric sedan ‘Seal’ at the Auto Expo. The company confirmed that the Seal will be launched in the Indian market in the fourth quarter of 2023. The sedan features an all-glass roof, a full-width LED light bar at the rear, a 15.6 inch infotainment display & a 10.25 inch display infront of the driver. The Seal uses BYD’s ‘Blade’ battery tech, which is already being used by the company in the recently launched Atto 3. The Seal will come with two battery options: 61.4kWh & 82.5kWh. The former has a claimed range of 550km and the latter has a range of 700km.

3. Hyundai IONIQ 5:

Hyundai India launched the IONIQ 5 electric SUV in a single fully-loaded variant priced at Rs 44.95 lakhs. The car sports a 72.6 kWh battery pack which offers a claimed range of 631 km. The cabin has a futuristic touch with features like 8-speaker Bose sound system, wireless phone charger, 6 airbags and dual 12.3 inch touchscreens (one for the infotainment console and the other for the driver which displays augmented reality functions like turn-by-turn navigation, etc). The IONIQ 5 was unveiled by Shahrukh Khan.

4. Tata Harrier EV & Sierra EV:

Tata Motors unveiled two electric SUVs. The Harrier EV, an all-wheel drive SUV, has been developed in collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover.

Apart from the Harrier EV, another electric car was presented which has a lot of nostalgic value among Indians, the Sierra. Tata Motors had showcased the Sierra EV Concept at Auto Expo 2020. Company sources claim that this 2023 showcased-version is a near-production variant of the car. Tata revealed the interiors & exteriors of the Sierra but technical specifications are yet to be announced.

5. New Electric Two-Wheelers Showcased At The Expo:

Joy e-Bike:

Vadodara-based ‘Wardwizard’, the parent of the electric two-wheeler brand ‘Joy e-Bike’, launched a new electric scooter ‘Mihos’ and showcased a semi-electric bike ‘Rockefeller’. The electric scooter ‘Mihos’ comes with a 2.5 kWh battery, offers a range of 100 km and supports fast-charging. The e-scooter is priced at Rs 1.49 lakh. The company also showcased a semi-electric bike called ‘Rockefeller’. The company didn’t reveal a lot about the bike.

Matter:

Ahmedabad-based ‘Matter’ unveiled 2 electric bikes tentatively named ‘UT’ & ‘EXE’. The production versions of these two concept bikes are likely to arrive in early 2024. The ‘UT’ will be positioned as a utility electric motorcycle and the company could target delivery service providers. The ‘EXE’ on the other hand has a sporty look. The EXE concept version showcased at the Auto Expo had high-end Pirelli GT tyres. Both these bikes come with swappable batteries.

LML:

LML is ready to enter the Indian auto market once again. The company unveiled an electric scooter ‘LML Star’ at the expo. The scooter has been designed in Italy and features a 4 kWh removable battery. The top speed is 85 km/hr. LML didn’t reveal the range.

LML will launch 2 more EVs: ‘Moonshot’ (an electric dirt bike) & ‘Orion’ (an electric hyperbike).

Ampere:

Greaves Electric, under its ‘Ampere’ brand, showcased a new electric scooter named ‘Primus’. It sports a 3 kWh battery which offers a range of 120 km. The Primus has a top speed of 75 km/hr and comes in three riding modes: Power, City & Eco. Apart from this, the company also featured 2 new concept electric scooters called NXG & NXU.
