1. IIT Madras develops a universal EV battery charger.
IIT Madras has developed a universal battery charger. The universal nature is due to its controller programming that can be changed to be compatible in different countries based on the input power supply. This charger provides a wide range of voltage, from 120V to 900V from a universal input power supply which allows charging for all EVs from a single charging unit, potentially eradicating the need for different, dedicated chargers for various types of vehicles like two, three & four-wheelers. The new charger can modify the available input power supply according to the EV's requirement and deliver an output voltage based on the battery pack voltage. Talks are on with multiple companies to commercialize the product.
The research, led by Dr Deepak Ronanki, Department of Engineering Design, IIT Madras, has been published in peer-reviewed journal IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics. Dr Ronanki stated, “We thought of one charger that could charge every type of vehicle and we were successful in developing one. When you have a universal charger, it will be like a petrol pump where you can refill every type of vehicle without any hassle. So far, no single charging unit can produce a wide output voltage range from 120V to 900V with a universal input power supply globally. Our charger can provide these features in addition to reconfigurability & modularity for adoption as on-board chargers & off-board chargers.”
2. Reliance Jio lists its EV charger on Amazon.
Reliance Jio has unveiled its new EV charger ‘JioEV Aries’, on Amazon. It is compatible with all electric cars & plug-in hybrid cars. This 7.4 kW capacity EV charger has received CE & ARAI certifications, and IP55 & IK10 rating. It weighs 4 kg and can be mounted on a wall, pillar or pole. The charger offers plug & play functionality with RFID technology, making it easy to connect & start charging.
With the Jio TruePower app, users can monitor the charging process and avail additional features. Connectivity options include 4G, Wi-Fi & LAN.
3. FY2024 EV sales jump 40% compared to previous year.
India's EV sales jumped an impressive 40.31% to 17,52,406 units in FY2024, JMK Research reported. This growth was mainly driven by electric two-wheelers & three-wheelers, which together accounted for 94% of the total EV sales across all categories for the year.
Electric two-wheeler sales reached 10,09,356 units. Electric three-wheeler sales (both passenger & cargo) reached 6,34,969 units. Electric car sales reached 99,085 units (a tremendous year-on-year jump of 82%). Electric bus sales reached 3,708 units.
4. Terra Charge to launch its 1st EV charging station in Chennai.
After signing an MoU to invest Rs 50 crore to boost EV charging infrastructure in Tamil Nadu during the Global Investor Meet, Terra Charge is ready to launch the 1st of its 5 EV charging stations in Chennai.
