EV Updates – Mega EV Project in Odisha by JSW Group, Bharat Mobility Global Expo in Delhi, Kinetic Green E-Luna and more

1. JSW Group planning a mega EV project in Odisha.

The Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group is working on a mega EV project which will be the world’s largest single location EV project, in Odisha’s Cuttack. The total investment is expected to be around Rs 40,000 crores. The Odisha state government has approved a special incentive package for the group.

An EV manufacturing & an EV battery manufacturing unit, will come up near Naraj in Cuttack district. These are likely to create employment for 4000 people. The JSW Group will invest Rs 25,000 crores for these in phases. In the future, the group has plans to set-up a plant for EV components in the same facility.

There are plans to set-up another EV component manufacturing unit, comprising of a copper smelter & a lithium smelter, at Paradeep in Jagatsinghpur district. The state government has approved a special incentive package focusing on land, electricity, water and capital subsidy. As part of the package, the state government has approved providing 1100 acres of land to the group in Cuttack at a concessional rate. The group will also get a capital subsidy of 20% of the total project cost during a period of 5 years.

2. Nagpur to get 150 EV charging stations.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced plans to set-up 150 EV charging stations to support the increasing number of electric vehicles in the city.

The civic body has already started identifying places for these EV charging stations. The project would be carried out under PPP model. Bids will be invited soon. NMC would provide land, while the allocated firms would set-up the charging infrastructure. NMC also has plans to phase out diesel buses in its bus fleet and replacing them with electric buses.

3. Okaya EV installs high capacity EV chargers for Ayodhya Water Metro Project.

Okaya EV has installed high capacity EV chargers for the Ayodhya Water Metro Project. The charging stations have been equipped with 150 kWh CCS2 fast-chargers. These will charge the electric boats plying between Guptar Ghat & Naya Ghat, as part of the Water Metro service in the holy city. These e-boats can accommodate up to 50 passengers and offer an efficient & sustainable mode of transportation. The Water Metro will reduce travel time between the 2 ghats while providing pilgrims with a scenic experience on the Sarayu river.

In the next phase of the water metro project, Okaya will set-up fast chargers in Varanasi.

4. Bharat Mobility Global Expo to be held in Delhi from February 1 to 3.

The Bharat Mobility Global Expo is set to be held in New Delhi from February 1 to 3. The grand event will center around mobility solutions of the future. Concept vehicles, EV charging solutions, EV batteries and autonomous driving technologies will be on display.

Mercedes-Benz India has confirmed that it will feature the EQG, which is essentially the electric version of the
popular G-Wagen SUV, at the expo.
Ford is expected to announce a comeback to the Indian market at the expo. The company is likely to showcase the Endeavour SUV. The return of Chinese EV maker Great Wall Motors is also expected. Also on display will be EV chargers and battery swapping solutions. The expo will also showcase drones.

The three day expo will be held from 1-3 February 2024, at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, in New Delhi. The venue, spread across over 1,00,000 square metres, will be witness to around 600 exhibitors from over 50 countries.

5. Kinetic Green brings back the Luna in an electric avatar.

Kinetic Green has announced the return of the iconic Luna in an electric avatar. The electric moped can now be booked for Rs 500.

The E-Luna keeps the original Luna style with a few modern touches. The vehicle is designed for personal commutes as well as last-mile delivery. The new Luna electric will offer a range of 110 km and a top speed of 50 km/hr. The charging time will be 4 hours. The electric moped will come with a portable charger. The claimed loading capacity is 150 kg. The display console will show speed, direction indicator, high beam indicator and battery state-of-charge. At present, the E-Luna will be available in one battery option and two colour options: blue & red. Almost all of the moped will be black in colour. Just a part of the frame will feature either of the two colours.

The battery capacity has not been announced yet. It is expected that the electric moped will feature a 2 kWh battery pack. The company is expected to introduce more battery options in the future. The E-Luna has been priced at Rs 74,990. It is costlier than the only other moped in India, the 100cc TVS XL, which is priced between Rs 44,999 to Rs 59,695. The E-Luna is expected to be available at an EMI of Rs 2500 per month. Apart from the Kinetic Green website, the E-Luna will also be available on Flipkart and Amazon. 

Kinetic Green has a manufacturing capacity of 5000 E-Luna units per month at its Ahmednagar (Maharashtra) manufacturing plant.
