1. BESCOM awarded for EV charging infrastructure.

The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) has been awarded the 'Charge India 2024 Excellence' award for its contribution towards establishing EV charging infrastructure in Karnataka. Energy Minister of Karnataka, KJ George gave a statement at the event: "Karnataka leads the way in providing affordable EV charging options and this achievement is a testament to our government's commitment to clean & sustainable energy."

Karnataka leads the country in terms of states with most widespread EV charging infrastructure, with a network of 5765 EV charging stations, out of which 4462 are in Bengaluru alone.

2. India’s EV charging market to reach new heights by 2030.

According to a recent report by 1Lattice, a tech-enabled market intelligence firm, India's EV charging market is projected to reach $3.7 billion by 2030. Abhishek Maiti from 1Lattice stated: "With India's EV market set to reach $3.7 billion by 2030, fast charging technologies & battery swapping solutions are key to addressing range anxiety and making EV adoption more practical for everyday users."

Internationally, EV charging infrastructure investments grew at a CAGR of around 30% between 2018-2023. India exceeded this international average and experienced a CAGR of 35% during the same period, the 1Lattice report stated.

3. Maruti Suzuki unveils the ‘e-Vitara’ in Italy.

Maruti Suzuki has unveiled its first electric car, the ‘e Vitara’, at an international event in Milan (Italy). The electric SUV was earlier introduced as the ‘eVX’ concept at the 2023 Auto Expo held in Delhi NCR. The eVX has now been rechristened as the e Vitara and will be globally launched in 2025. Production will take place at Suzuki’s Gujarat facility, which is dedicated to EV manufacturing.

The Suzuki e Vitara will initially go on sale in Japan & Europe, before being launched in India in summer 2025. However, the car will be manufactured for the international markets at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat plant. It will come in two battery options: 49 kWh offering two-wheel drive (2WD) & 61 kWh offering 2WD and 4WD.

The e Vitara will make its Asian debut at the Auto Expo in Delhi NCR in January 2025. Suzuki & Toyota have been working together on an electric car. There is likely to be a Toyota-badged version of the e-Vitara coming in the future as well.

4. Oben Electric launches the Rorr EZ electric motorcycle.

Oben Electric has launched its second product, the Oben Rorr EZ electric motorcycle, with prices starting from Rs 89,999. The bike is available in 3 battery options: 2.6 kWh, 3.4 kWh & 4.4 kWh. The new electric bike will feature Oben’s patented LFP battery tech, known for superior temperature resistance & longer lifecycle.

The new Oben Rorr EZ can accelerate from 0-40 km/hr in 3.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 95 km/hr. The claimed range is 175 km. And with fast-charging capabilities, the Rorr EZ can charge 80% in 45 minutes.

Bookings for the Oben Rorr EZ are open with a nominal fee of Rs 2999. The company has also introduced affordable EMI plans starting at just Rs 2200 per month. Test rides are available at Oben Electric showrooms.

5. EV sales witness enormous growth in October.

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) has reported an impressive growth in EV sales in October 2024 with a 55% year-on-year (YoY) & 36% month-on-month (MoM) growth. This increase is largely due to the Navratri & Diwali festive season, which considerably boosted EV demand, with manufacturers also offering discounts & benefits. Electric scooters are still the key driver in the country’s EV market, recording around 1.40 lakh units sold in October, up from around 75,000 in the same month last year. This impressive 85% YoY growth shows how people have accepted electric scooters as an efficient city transport option. On a MoM basis, e-scooter sales jumped by 55% from around 90,000 units in September. Ola Electric & TVS Motors led the electric scooter sales list with Ola reporting a 74% YoY jump & TVS an 81% YoY jump.

Electric cars also witnessed considerable growth with 10,609 units sold in October, an 81% MoM increase from 5,874 units in September and a 40% YoY jump from 7,626 units in October 2023. Tata Motors dominated this segment with 6,152 units sold and registering a 10% YoY gain, while MG India saw an impressive 170% YoY increase, selling 2,530 units.
