1. Biogas-powered EV charging station in Mumbai.
Bangalore-based GPS Renewables, a cleantech company founded in 2012 by two IIM graduates, has come up with a biogas-powered EV charging station in Mumbai. With assistance from ‘Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC)’ & ‘Aerocare Clean Energy’, GPS Renewables has set up an EV charging station near Haji Ali in Mumbai. The biogas being used is generated from a biomethane plant set up near the charging station. From the plant, purified biogas is fed into a genset designed to use biogas as fuel, which in turn produces electric power. This renewable power then becomes the input for the EV charging station. This is a fast-charging station and the price of charging an EV here is Rs 15 per kWh (unit). The input (waste/garbage) for the waste-to-power generation plant is sourced from nearby hotels, restaurants & dhabas. The organic wet waste is transported to the plant through waste collector trucks from Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.
