1. Tata Motors aims to electrify 50% of its portfolio by 2030.
In its 2022-23 annual report, Tata Motors stated its plan to increase EV contribution in its portfolio to 25% over the next 5 years and 50% by 2030. In the long term, the company aims to attain net zero by 2040.
In May 2023, Tata Motors witnessed a 66% growth in electric car sales in domestic & international markets.
The company also aims to expand its EV dealerships, after-sales service network and EV charging network across the country. As far as new launches are concerned, the Punch EV is likely to arrive in the second half of 2023. Other future electric car launches from the automaker include the Altroz EV, Curvv EV, Avinya EV, Sierra EV, Safari EV and Harrier EV.
2. EV charging stations installed at Delhi-NCR hotels & resorts.
Westin Hotels, owned by the Marriott Group, announced installation of EV charging stations at two of its properties in Delhi-NCR: The Westin Gurgaon and The Westin Sohna Resort & Spa. Westin has collaborated with Charge Zone for these charging stations which will be available for hotel guests & employees.
These EV fast-charging stations have 60 kW DC dual guns that can charge two electric cars simultaneously. The charging stations also include an AC charger.
3. Logistics company MOVIN inducts EVs in its fleet.
MOVIN, a logistics joint venture between global shipping and logistics company UPS and InterGlobe (owner of IndiGo Airlines), has added EVs to its fleet for first & last-mile deliveries. The newly-inducted EVs will initially be deployed in Delhi-NCR and later in Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Pune by the end of 2023.
These Tata Ace EVs have a capacity to carry cargo up to 850 kg and a range of 120 km. MOVIN was recently awarded the 'Express Logistics Start-Up of the Year' at CII Institute of Logistics Awards.
4. Jaguar Land Rover to join hands with Indian battery company Agratas for long range batteries.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) will collaborate with Indian battery company Agratas for long-range EV batteries (range up to 720 km). Both JLR & Agratas are owned by Tata. Agratas will supply battery packs of 120 kWh capacity for future JLR electric cars. Initially, the batteries are expected to be manufactured in Gujarat. Agratas is planning to set-up a battery cell plant in Europe.
JLR has announced that batteries from Agratas would have a 'much higher energy density' than those currently being used in the Jaguar I-Pace. The company is also working on an electric variant of Range Rover.
Both companies will also work together on a battery recycling system.
5. Foxconn to set up EV plant in India.
Foxconn, best known for producing iPhones for Apple, is planning an EV factory in India. The company manufactures electric vehicle parts for several brands (including Stellantis and Gogoro). The Taiwan-based company is expected to invest $1 billion in the project in India.
Foxconn already has a tie-up with Indian electric scooter manufacturer Ather Energy. Foxconn had also announced a joint venture with Vedanta for semiconductor manufacturing in India in February 2022.
The company in its annual report talked about establishing a production line in India this year and deploy its BOL policy (Build-Operate-Localize), to cater to the electric two-wheeler market in Southeast Asia.
