EV Charging Etiquette: Do's and Dont's for Users

Charging an electric vehicle (EV) is a shared responsibility, and practicing good etiquette at charging stations helps ensure a positive experience for all users. Here are some do's and don'ts for EV charging etiquette:

Do's

  1. Be Mindful of Others: Always be considerate of other EV drivers who may be waiting to charge. Don't monopolize a charging station longer than necessary.

  2. Respect Reserved Spaces: If a charging station has reserved spaces for disabled drivers, charging network members, or specific EV models, only use them if you meet the criteria.

  3. Follow Charging Etiquette Signs: Pay attention to any posted signage at the charging station, as it may contain specific instructions or time limits for charging.

  4. Plan Ahead: Before heading to a charging station, check the availability and status of chargers through a mobile app or website. Plan your charging stops accordingly.

  5. Park Correctly: Park your EV within the designated parking spot for the charger, ensuring that your cable reaches your vehicle without obstructing other spaces.

  6. Share the Charger: If multiple charging ports are available on a single charger, share it with another EV driver when possible. Avoid occupying all ports if you only need one.

  7. Move Your Vehicle When Charging is Complete: Once your vehicle is charged, promptly move it from the charging spot to free it up for others. Many charging stations have idle fees for those who overstay.

  8. Be Prepared for Delays: Be patient if you arrive at a charging station and find it in use. EV charging can take some time, so bring something to do or be willing to wait your turn.

  9. Report Issues: If you encounter a malfunctioning charger or see any damage, report it to the charging network operator or the facility manager.

Don'ts

  1. ICE-ing (Blocking) Charging Stations: Don't park non-electric vehicles in EV charging spots, even if it's for just a moment. This can inconvenience EV drivers and disrupt charging sessions.

  2. Leave Unattended: Don't leave your vehicle unattended while it's charging, as it may create safety hazards and prevent others from using the charger.

  3. Unplug Others Prematurely: Avoid unplugging another EV before their charging session is complete unless it's an emergency or you have their permission.

  4. Hog Charging Stations: Don't use a charging station for longer than necessary. Once your vehicle is sufficiently charged, free up the spot for others to use.

  5. Leave Trash Behind: Be respectful of the charging station area and the environment. Dispose of any trash properly and keep the area clean.

  6. Idle in the Charging Spot: Don't use the charging station as a parking spot if you're not actively charging your EV. This can prevent others from accessing the charger.

  7. Use Non-Compatible Chargers: Make sure your EV is compatible with the charging station you're using. Don't attempt to connect to a charger that's not compatible with your vehicle.

  8. Skip the line: Avoid skipping the line at a charging station. Check your surroundings and ensure that you didn't accidentally skip ahead of other EVs waiting their turn. If someone is waiting ahead of you, be patient and wait for your turn.

  9. Treat charging stations as parking spots: Charging stations are not bonus parking spots. Once your vehicle is fully charged, move it to a regular parking spot to free up the charging station for other users. Parking your non-EV in a charging station spot is not only inconsiderate but also may be illegal in some areas.

Additional tips

  • Be prepared. Know which type of charging connector your vehicle uses and where the charging port is located.

  • Plan ahead. If you are going to be traveling a long distance, use a charging station map to plan your route and identify charging stations along the way.

  • Be patient. Charging times can vary depending on the type of charger and the size of your vehicle's battery. Be prepared to wait a little while for your vehicle to charge.

By following these do's and don'ts, you can help create a more courteous and efficient charging experience for all EV users and contribute to the growth of electric vehicle adoption.
