Empowering Green Commutes: The Rise of EV Charging Stations in Gujarat
The state government created the Gujarat State Electric Vehicle Policy in 2021 to create Gujarat as a leading manufacturing center for electric cars and related businesses. Since the adoption of this legislation, the registration of electric vehicles (EVs) in the state has increased by 1475%.
Electric Vehicle Market in Gujarat
The overall number of registered EVs in Gujarat has increased from 7,240 before the policy's implementation to an astonishing 118,086.
An average of 8,858 EVs have been registered monthly during the previous five months. Surat has the most registered EVs, with 31,561, followed by Ahmedabad with 20,937, Vadodara with 7,648, Rajkot with 6,678, and Jamnagar with 3,259.
There are 106,341 two-wheelers, 4,093 three-wheelers, 5,646 four-wheelers, and 2,006 other EVs registered. This increase in EV registrations indicates the Gujarat State Electric Vehicle Policy's efficacy and influence in promoting the use of electric mobility in the state.
Collaboration with BISAG-N
Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations are being built quickly in Gujarat, with plans to build 250 additional public charging stations in the next few days. At the moment, the state has 152 charging stations. The government hopes to build a standardized charging infrastructure and expedite the selection process for charging station sites by collaborating with BISAG-N. To that purpose, 91 hotspots in municipal corporations, 48 in municipal regions, 96 along state and national roads, and 15 at famous tourist locations have been identified.
The state government, through its 2021 strategy, gives large incentives to stimulate the broad use of EVs.
Two-wheelers are eligible for a maximum subsidy of 20,000, three-wheelers for up to 50,000, and four-wheeler electric vehicles for up to 1,50,000. The state government has already paid out a total of 133.83 crore in subsidies. This scheme will be in place for four years, during which time incentives will be extended to a total of two lakh electric cars. These programs illustrate the state's commitment to promoting electric mobility and easing the transition to more environmentally friendly modes of transportation.
Gujarat EV Policy
On June 23, 2021, the Gujarat government released its Electric Vehicle Policy-2021, detailing a strategic plan for promoting the growth of the state's EV sector from 2021 to 2025, with a budgeted commitment of Rs. 870 crores.
Objectives and Aim of Gujarat EV Policy
The Gujarat State EV Policy 2021 has four key goals:
- Increase EV Usage: Over a four-year period, promote the use of electric cars.
- Make Gujarat an EV Hub: Make Gujarat a hub for electric vehicles and related materials.
- Encourage the establishment of businesses and attract investors in the electric mobility sector by supporting electric mobility companies.
- Environmental Protection: Reduce air pollution and protect the environment.
The strategy sets an ambitious goal of encouraging the purchase of two lakh electric cars over a four-year period. Over half of this aim is devoted to two-wheelers, with the remainder divided among three- and four-wheelers.
Gujarat efforts to promote itself as a manufacturing hub for electric vehicles (EVs)
Gujarat, which is growing as an important car manufacturing base in India, is making inroads into the electric vehicle (EV) market. The growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs), fueled by lower operating costs and government incentives, has prompted automobile and two-wheeler manufacturers to expand their presence in Gujarat. The state is becoming a focus center for these firms, granting tax breaks and rapidly extending its charging infrastructure. With both state and federal legislation encouraging the use of greener technology, corporations with established manufacturing facilities in Gujarat are investing heavily to expand their capabilities in the electric car arena.
