Introduction to Charging of Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles are the future mobility option that would not only suffice a tangible future full of sustainability but will also help in making a nation economically powerful.

There are three different methods of charging your EV

1. Trickle Charge: This is the slowest method of charging your EV at home. It uses three-prong chargers of 220V plug.

2. AC Chargers: It lets you charge 3-4 times more and can be installed at any location.

3. DC Chargers: The fastest way to charge your EV- both in public and private with a power of 50W and above. It takes approximately 40 minutes to charge your EV up to 80%.

Fact: According to BESCOM, the current fixed charges per kW for low tension (LT) voltage (AC – slow chargers) is INR 60 per kW, and for high tension (HT) voltage (DC – fast charges) is INR 190 per kW for high voltage line.

Types of Electric vehicle chargers

1. Rapid AC Chargers: Rapid AC chargers give power at 43 kW (three-stage, 63A) and utilize the Type 2 charging standard. Rapid AC units are commonly ready to charge an EV to 80% in 20-40 minutes depending on the model's battery limit and beginning condition of charge.

2. Fast Chargers: Fast chargers are regularly evaluated at either 7 kW or 22 kW (single-or three-stage 32A). By far most quick chargers give AC charging. Charging times change on unit speed and the vehicle, yet a 7 kW charger will re-energize a viable EV with a 40 kWh battery in 4-6 hours, and a 22 kW charger in 1-2 hours. Quick chargers will in general be found at objections, for example, vehicle parks, grocery stores, or relaxation focuses, where you are possible to be left at for an hour or more.

3. Slow Chargers: Most slow charging units are appraised at up to 3 kW, an adjusted figure that catches most slow charging gadgets. As a general rule, slow charging is completed between 2.3 kW and 6 kW, however, the most widely recognized lethargic chargers are appraised at 3.6 kW (16A). Charging on a three-pin attachment will commonly see the vehicle draw 2.3 kW (10A), while most light post chargers are appraised at 5.5 kW due to existing foundation – some are 3 kW be that as it may. Charging times differ contingent upon the charging unit and EV being charged, however, a full charge on a 3 kW unit will regularly require 6-12 hours. Most sluggish charging units are untethered, implying that a link is needed to interface the EV with the charge point.
