Are there sufficient charging stations to make Electric Vehicle viable?

Adopting electric mobility requires sufficient access to electric infrastructure, and to gain this, there are development measures, starting with EV charging stations. Electric charging stations are the soul of gaining electric mobility, as there is no ideal number of stations to build, but easy access can be the criteria.  Let us take an overview of where India lands in terms of gaining electric mobility.

‌What is an EV charging station?

An EV charging station is a public or private charging point where you can plug in and charge your electric vehicles. Technically it is a machine that connects and recharges Electric Vehicles. These charging stations are also called electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). These stations can charge bikes, scooters and rickshaws, and cars.

‌Types of EV Chargers

Currently, there are 3levels of charging.

Level 1

Provides charging through 120 volts outlet, doesn't need external hardware required cord is present in the control box, has a 3pin wall socket. These chargers take 16 to 20 hours until full charge. (varies upon the battery).

Level 2

Charges via a 240-volt outlet; additional hardware is required. Level 2 chargers are thought to be faster and more energy-efficient than level 1 chargers. This charger takes 6 to 8 hours to charge completely.

Level 3

DC fast chargers convert the AC into DC to directly store in the batteries. Provides charging through 480 volts. Often used by public charging stations, this charger can charge around 80% in an hour.

‌Most Common Charger in India

Type of chargers based on the type of vehicle, as low power vehicle requires lower level chargers.  Whereas newly launched  SUVs need high-level chargers, there is a shift and adaptation in the most common chargers. But for wrapping up with the most common one is the level one charger, as every household with an EV is entitled to have it.

‌The current count of EVCS in India

A report compiled by the Department of Heavy Industries showcases the state-wise installation of charging stations. This report indicates the number of installations, during FAME 1 and 2 in different cities. The first phase of FAME India was limited to few states. Under the second phase of the FAME India (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India) scheme, 317 EV charging stations have sanctioned in Maharashtra, 266 in Andhra Pradesh, 256 in Tamil Nadu, 228 in Gujarat, 205 in Rajasthan, 207 in Uttar Pradesh, 172 in Karnataka, 159 in Madhya Pradesh, 141 in West Bengal, 138 in Telangana, 131 in Kerala, 72 in Delhi, 70 in Chandigarh, 50 in Haryana, 40 in Meghalaya, 37 in Bihar, 29 in Sikkim, 25 each in Jammu, Srinagar, and Chhattisgarh, 20 in Assam, 18 in Odisha and 10each in Uttarakhand, Puducherry and Himachal Pradesh.
